Crabbing 101: How to Catch Your Own Dinner
Crabbing is proof you don’t need a $400 rod or a 200-yard cast to catch something delicious. Just drop a trap, wait a bit, and hope your dinner walks right in. Here’s how to do it right—whether you’re on a pier, dock, or boat.
Gear Up
You’ll need a crab trap or hoop net, 50–100 feet of rope, a bait cage or clip, a cooler or bucket, gloves, and a crab gauge for measuring.
Box-style crab traps are generally more effective than hoops. Traps allow crabs to enter and stay put, while hoop nets need faster pulls and good timing to secure your catch.
Always check your local regulations—some areas require biodegradable escape rings or limit the number of traps per angler.
Here’s a crab cage in action:
Bait Smart
Crabs love oily, stinky stuff. Think mackerel, sardines, squid, or chicken necks. Use a bait cage to keep it secure.
Freeze bait in mesh produce bags ahead of time. It cuts down on mess and makes re-baiting fast and easy.
Set the Trap
Drop your trap near structure like rocks, pilings, or eelgrass beds. Depths between 10 and 30 feet are ideal.
Add small weights to the trap doors—like stainless steel nuts, lead strips, or washers. Attach them to the bottom edge of each door using stainless wire or marine-grade zip ties. This adds just enough resistance to keep crabs from pushing the doors open and crawling back out.
Keep It Anchored
Crab traps drift easily in current.
Zip-tie rebar or dive weights to the base of your trap to hold it steady.
Float your rope with sections of floating line to prevent snags on rocky bottoms.
Soak and Check
Let traps soak for 30 to 60 minutes before pulling. Too soon and crabs haven’t settled in. Too long and they may wander out.
Measure and Keep it Legal
Use your gauge. Toss back anything undersized or egg-carrying females. Play it clean, keep it sustainable, and enjoy the boil.

🎣 IN THE FIELD
Think being a fishing guide is just casting lines and collecting tips? Try playing therapist, mechanic, weatherman, and fish-finder—all before lunch—with a cooler full of melted ice and someone’s cousin puking over the gunnel.
This is a fun alternative if you don’t want to go through the trouble of rigging a full crab trap:
Anglercore is the fashion world’s latest cast—it’s when folks rock fishing vests, rain pants, and waterproof boots not for chasing trout, but for chasing clout. Think fly-fishing gear meets streetwear: pocket-heavy jackets, mesh caps, and utility everything, all styled like you’re about to net a personal best… even if the closest you’ve been to a lake is the iced matcha in your reusable bottle.
