It’s summertime and that means grill season is amongst us 🔥

🎣 Upgrade Your Lures With Better Hooks
You finally hooked into a monster—only to watch it shake off because your hook bent like a wet noodle. Sound familiar? If you're still using the stock hooks that came with your lures, you’re playing the fishing game on hard mode.
Here’s how to upgrade your hooks for better hookups and fewer heartbreaks:
1. Swap ‘Em Right Out of the Box
Most mass-produced lures come with cheap, dull hooks to cut costs. Don’t wait until one fails—replace treble or single hooks right away with sharp, high-quality options from brands like Gamakatsu, Owner, or VMC. You’ll notice the difference the moment a fish bites—and stays on.
2. Use Split Rings (Don’t Fight the Hardware)
To change out hooks without damaging your lure, invest in split ring pliers. These handy tools make it easy to remove and attach hooks or upgrade to stronger rings. Bonus: good split rings don’t flex under pressure.
Side note - it turns out that split rings don’t hurt lure action at all:
3. Match Hook Size to Maintain Lure Action
Go too big on your replacement hooks and your lure’s action could suffer. Go too small and you risk losing fish. Try to match the original size or go up one size if the lure can handle it.
4. Add a Barrel Swivel for Freedom and Strength
On spoons, inline spinners, and even some crankbaits, a small barrel swivel between lure and hook can reduce line twist—but here’s the real magic: it allows the lure to rotate 360° during the fight. That movement means fewer head shakes throw the hook and more fish make it to the net.
Better hooks = better odds. Make the swap and start sticking more fish.

🎣 IN THE FIELD
A good reminder to sharpen your hooks!:
California’s limited ocean salmon opener on June 7–8 brought exceptional fishing conditions, with anglers quickly hitting limits along much of the coast—from Crescent City down to Avila Beach. The success marked a strong comeback after closures in 2023, renewing optimism for the health of local salmon stocks.
Although they may look cool, power hook sets are not the move for actually landing fish:
